ROYAL AND VOLCANIC LANDS
Rich by its history, and strength today, the Auvergne has always known how to maximise its particularities to its advantage. A regional identity that perpetuates a true tradition made of authenticity, openess and dynamism.
At the crossroads of North and Southern Europe, only a few hours from Paris, the central location of Clermont-Ferrand is one of its major advantages. Since the middle of the 20th century, the economy of Clermont Ferrand is strictly linked to the Michelin company, which has had a strong influence in the development of the town.
The natural environment of the town is exceptional, neighbouring the Volcanic Parks of the Auvergne and Livradois Forez with the sights of Puy de Dome, Gergovie and Vulcania.
Through the ages from the X to XX centuries the Auvergnian chateaux are witness to their history by studying the constant change of their architecture. From the château fort to the palace of the Bourbon, from defensive moats to landscaped gardens, from loopholes to project arrows and musket balls to large windows to let light in, the chateaux of the Auvergne contain most of the architectural styles from the different ages, over more than 40 sites (Château de la Roche, Château de Ravel, Anjony, Parentignat, Aulteribe, Tournoel, Vollore, La Batisse...)
The chain of the Puys offer in a limited space a unique variety of volcanic edifices in characteristic forms. Over 40km from north to south, a hundred volcanoes cover the landscape with the majority situated on the Dome plateau between the fault line of the Limagne, dominating Clermont-Ferrand, and the valley of the Sioule.
